Alcohol & Muscle Growth
Alcohol is a substance that can have both positive and negative effects on the body. Some studies indicate benefits to the heart and elsewhere from moderate alcohol intake. And everyone is aware of the downside of imbibing too much alcohol – liver disease and a host of other physically devastating results from long-term use. And there is always the short-term danger of getting in a wreck or other accident from the mental impairment that alcohol imposes. But what about the muscles? And more specifically, what effect does alcohol have on muscle growth?
If you are trying to build your muscles up, alcohol isn't your friend. Alcohol kills protein synthesis and also drops the testosterone levels in the body. Some people even view alcohol as a "muscle killer".
Alcohol lowers the free and the total testosterone in the human body. Alcohol is powerful enough to cause this reduction to be in force for a full day (24 hours). Worse, continually imbibing of alcohol can create a permanent impairment of the body's testosterone.
Another way that alcohol trips the body up is that it slows the body's metabolism, is higher in caloric content than protein or carbs, and can tend to push the body toward becoming fatter.
